Record year for new home consents in Wellington region – NZ Stats

The number of new homes in the Wellington region reached a record high in the year ended June 2018, Stats NZ said today.

There were 2,781 new homes in the region, up 29 percent from the previous year ( 2.155). Regional records began 28 years ago in 1991.

The annual number of new homes in the Wellington region has been rising since 2012.

"Wellington region consented to a record number of new homes in the June 2018 year," construction indicators manager Melissa McKenzie said. "This is 7.3 percent higher than the previous peak of 2.632 in the August 2003 year."

In the year ended June 2018, 2,781 new homes were granted in the Wellington region, comprising: [19659002] 1,535 stand-alone houses [19659002] 565 apartments (461 in Wellington city)

451 townhouses, flats, units, and other dwellings (301 in Wellington city)

230 retirement village units.

About two-fifths of all new homes the region in the June 2018 year were in Wellington city.

The number of new homes in the Wellington region in the year ended June 2018 were:

1,136 in Wellington city – up 31 percent compared with the June 2017 year

395 in Lower Hutt city – up 85 percent

323 in Upper Hutt city – up 81 percent

287 in Porirua city – up 0.7 percent

241 in Kapiti Coast District – down 17 percent

192 in Masterton district – up to 63 percent

106 in Carterton district – up 7.1 percen t

101 in South Wairarapa district – down 1.0 percent.

Wellington region consented to the fourth-highest number of new homes in the year ended June 2018 (2,781).
