Xiaomi recently opened its first Mi Store in the Oceania region, right here in New Zealand.
There was a lot of publicity around the Mi Home electric scooter – which seems pretty incredible – and as a result, they sold almost immediately.
But the other big impact of opening Mi's bright orange doors at Sylvia Park is that we now have access to a whole new line of phones …
The Redmi Note 5 is full of surprises, even for a phone junkie like me.
At first, it is hard to know what to expect from Note 5, especially since I had never seen a device made by Xiaomi. Also available in powder blue, the black version I wear pushes the minimalist design to the extreme. From the matte metal back shell to the reinforced corners of the shock absorbing device, this phone is really black. Even the transparent case included in the box is tinged with black. The Redmi Note 5 is almost the opposite of some of the loud multicolored devices we have seen throughout the year.
This is a solid kit, quite heavy in the hand. Unusually, the seams, seams and edges are all slightly raised – as if you wanted to create a tactile experience that suggests industrial use rather than slipping on the floor.
The 5.99-inch widescreen looks even bigger than it is, because of the size and width of the glasses. The top bezel contains a speaker, selfie camera and a selfie lamp – the bottom bezel does not contain anything, so I guess it's just for aesthetic balance.
The bottom edge of Note 5 is the main physical index of the part of the telephony market in which it is registered; just the down speaker, a real live headphone jack (soon off, I think) and most importantly, a microUSB port – very old fashioned by the end of 2018.
So, that may not sound like style and elegance, but once you've activated note 5, functionality is paramount. The Snapdragon 636 octacore processor, combined with 4 GB of respectable RAM, allows this phone to continue flying with very little breaks, jumps or jerks.
As it was my first experience with the MIUI 9 operating system, I decided to head my head first, remove the buttons from the screen and learn the range of gestures Redmi. In fact, I found that it was very intuitive overall, my only real frustration being to scroll through the photos; the gesture of return is a slide on the side of the screen – easily confused with a slide to the next photo. It's a question of muscle memory, I guess.
Not all phones handle the split screen feature well, if it offers it at all. The Redmi Note 5 makes things easier. It's stable and the screen is certainly big enough to handle it. In fact, the screen is ideal for any kind of content – navigation, video, and so on.
The cameras were the other big surprise for me. Dual 15MP + 5MP rear camera combined with a 13MP selfie camera. No, these theses will not win any prizes in the face of the flagship brands, but the low-light performance is actually not too poor – especially from the front camera because of its own built-in selfie light. There is also a good selection of beauty settings, quite customizable compared to many other phones that I've tried. In fact, I'm still not beautiful at the end, but a little closer than usual.
The life of the battery is the characteristic of the hero of this phone. There is not much else with a huge 4000 mAh battery like this. Yes, the charging cable is out of date, but you can easily use this phone for a few days.
At only $ 398.99, the Redmi Note 5 is located in the lower middle market, but it has the characteristics and performance of a handset located in the upper part of the same market. I think this makes it a very good buy.
