Take a trip to Mars with Airbnb – no space travel required

The nerds of space, get ready to get closer to the red planet. On July 27, Mars will be closest to the Earth in 15 years. To celebrate the fact that Mars, Earth and the Sun will be in a straight line during their orbits – an event known as the Opposition – Airbnb hosts are putting on fun.

A one-of-a-kind experience will let you discover the red planet from one of the world's largest telescopes the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), in La Palma, Spain . Six guests will join hosts Juan Antonio González, a local astronomy guide, and Antonio Luis Cabrera, the chief of scientific operations at GTC, to learn the importance of preserving the sky through the largest optical telescope and infrared at a single aperture in the world. Guests can reflect on the great issues of life by contemplating (or even photographing) the ice caps and dust storms of the red planet and taking the front row seat of the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century.

If you can not swing a trip to Mars or Spain, there are a few places to watch the stars closer to home, like this cabin in the middle of the Umpqua forest of Oregon, this dome in the middle of Joshua Tree, and these star booths at Twentynine Palms, California

If Mars is not your thing, there are many other opportunities for stargazing offered by Airbnb Experiences. There are stars on the Big Island of Hawaii, a chance to learn astrophotography in Santa Monica or Auckland, and much more for starry sky lovers.
