Black Ops 4's design director, Call Of Duty: defended the previous comments, claiming that Blackout's characters would only be blocked by missions, even if it's no longer the case.

The latest update, Operation Grand Heist, has quietly added boxes of loot to the game – which can be obtained automatically by playing in multiplayer mode, but can also be purchased through the Black Market system.

Coupled with a season pass of £ 39.99 and the amount of microtransactions already in the game, the addition of loot boxes has not been well received by fans. It also means that some Blackout characters are now locked in the loot system, which means you have to buy them or get through the game just hoping you'll be lucky.

The outcry saw an old interview resurface with Treyarch's design director, David Vonderhaar, where he told Game Informer in September 2018 – before the game was released – that Blackout's characters would only be blocked by missions.

The interview was rediscovered by fans on Reddit, accusing Vonderhaar of lying, but the director himself replied on the thread by writing: "At the time, this interview had been done, and it is exactly how it worked If I went back in time and did this interview again, I should answer it as I did then.

"Things are changing along the way … and not all of them are design decisions."

He then described many examples of things that had changed within Black Ops 4 since the interview, including allowing specialists to be unlocked by anyone and adding new characters. for holders of a season ticket.
