A New Zealand church was surprised by opening a cabinet to find a 400 year old Bible years in the interior.

According to the New Zealand website Stuff.co.nz, the Bible found in St. Peter's Church in Palmerston North is a Bible of the 1616 version of King James, which makes it extremely rare.

The website reports that the Bible was first discovered by the church in 2012, wrapped in a briefcase, although church officials apparently are not very sure of how it happened there.

The congregation of the faithful of Saint-Pierre dates from the early 1900s. They do not know how the historical Bible could have been in their closet.

Rev. Amy Houben of St. Peter's thinks he may have been brought to the country by someone who has come to New Zealand to settle since the Great -Britain.

"It seems almost irrelevant to have it in old New Zealand," she said on the site. "He has old bones and a good heart, but he comes from a completely different world."

The Bible came out this week to coincide with National Bible Day on July 15th.

But this time, it's not wrapped in a towel. He is exposed inside his own special cabinet so that members of the public can see the fragile object without damaging it.

Since its discovery, the congregation has also invested in a new blanket for her.

Houben admitted, however, that she felt a little bad about the sacred book kept locked inside a showcase.

"I'm really sorry for this old girl in some way," Houben said. "They were made to be read and kept, they were not made to be locked in a glass coffin."

According to the site, an expert told the church that the Bible in their possession was genuine and extremely rare. only 30 copies of the 1616 print copy of the King James Bible should still be in existence.
