The Scuderia Toro Rosso issued a statement thanking Brendon Hartley for his time with the team, three days after announcing his replacement without mentioning the New Zealander.

Toro Rosso confirmed Monday that he had hired Alexander Albon for the race in 2019 which, with the return of Daniil Kvyat, leaves Hartley in the cold after just one full season in Formula 1.

The place of double world endurance champion in the Junior Red Bull had been questioned during much of the 2018 season, while his teammate Pierre Gasly had obtained a promotion in the senior team for next year .

Following the announcement of Toro Rosso, Hartley said on social media that he had "unfinished business" in F1.

The team has now issued the following statement:

Scuderia Toro Rosso thanks Brendon Hartley for his contribution to the team

After the recent announcement that Alexander Albon will join Scuderia Toro Rosso to compete alongside Daniil Kvyat in 2019, we thank Brendon Hartley for his campaign with the team.

After an extremely successful sports car career, Brendon returned to the F1 family of Red Bull, making his Formula 1 debut with Toro Rosso at the 2017 US Grand Prix.

Brendon has played an important role in developing our partnership with Honda. His experience and comments have been very helpful. We wish Brendon all the best for the future.

Franz Tost, director of Scuderia Toro Rosso, said: "We would like to thank Brendon for his hard work with the team. Switching from sports cars to Formula 1 was not an easy task, especially in the short term. His consistency over the last four races of 2017 earned him a place in 2018 and, although we were unable to continue in 2019, he was a key member of the team and contributed to the Honda powertrain development. We wish him the best in his future projects. "
