Triathlon champion and Ironman Terenzo Bozzone was seriously injured by a truck.

Bozzone was cycling on Waitakere Rd in Kumeu, in northwestern Auckland, when he was hit just after 2 pm Tuesday.

A witness who was first on the scene said he saw the truck parked on the side of the road and then ran off at full speed.

"When the truck left, I saw a man lying on the road, I jumped to help him, he was semi-conscious and his bike was in two pieces."

The witness realized that the cyclist was Bozzone after his father showed up at the scene.

"I left while the paramedics were loading [Bozzone] into the ambulance, he was conscious but seemed to have a lot of trouble."

A spokeswoman for St. John Ambulance said that a person had been taken from the scene of the accident to the Auckland City Hospital. in serious condition.

A spokeswoman for the Auckland District Health Board would not give an update on the state of Bozzone, citing patients' privacy.

An Instagram article posted to Bozzone's account indicated that the athlete was in the ER, where his injuries were still being assessed.

The job asked anyone with information about the accident to contact the Henderson Police.

The witness described the truck as a brown logging truck with metal plates.

A spokesman said the police "investigated" to talk to the driver.

Emergency services were on site for about three hours and motorists were advised to avoid the area or to allocate additional time.

The road was closed for a few hours but reopened around 5:15 pm

Bozzone, 33, grew up in South Africa and moved to New Zealand in his youth.

In March, he won the New Zealand Ironman at Taupo in record time of seven hours, 59 minutes and 56 seconds, breaking the previous record by more than seven minutes.

He had previously come in second four times.

Bozzone also holds the record for the California Wildflower Triathlon course, which he established in 2006, and in 2008 he won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Florida.

He and his wife Kelly have two children – a son, Cavallo, and a daughter, Zaya. They live on the north coast of Auckland.

Ironman NZ spokesman Andrew Dewhurst said that he was unaware of the incident.

He did not wish to comment except to "send our prayers and best wishes to [Bozzone] and the family," he said.
