Wellington's "Whale Circulation" jams the streets as the visitor puts on a show

The wind and rain did not discourage hundreds of people flocking to the foreshore to see Wellington's star visitor, causing heavy congestion on Cobham Drive and Evans Bay Parade.

The Southern Right Whale was first spotted Sunday morning near Somes Island, before swimming in Evans Bay and spending most of the day near the Miramar Wharf.

The whale did a show for the spectators, coming out of the water at Evans Bay, causing traffic to stop on Cobham Dr while people were taking pictures

A police media spokesman said that they were unable to tell how many traffic incidents were caused by the whale.

On Saturday, motorists posted on social networks to complain that drivers had blocked a freeway on the highway, near where the whale was frolicking beside Interislander terminal.

The whale could still be seen in Evans Bay at 3 pm Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Department of Conservation said she saw the whale in Evans Bay.

DOC wanted to reiterate its message so that spectators stay more than 50 meters away and no more than three ships in the vicinity, she said.

On Friday, Wellington City Council postponed its Matariki fireworks until next week, as the increase in traffic in the harbor could affect the whale.

Many have unofficially named the whale Matariki.

The sex of the whale is not officially known, and will not be known until the results of a Niwa biopsy are returned.
