Meteorologist MetService Karl Loots says a narrow rain band Island was responsible for heavy showers that caused flooding in parts of Wellington during the night.
"The band of rain is now out but behind it comes a cold front in the extreme south and an unstable west flow, with frequent showers and isolated thunderstorms.
"Almost everywhere in the world will be affected, with the exception of Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa and Canterbury."
Auckland was in a day of observation, potentially heavy in the afternoon, and a maximum of 16 C.
Most heavy rain is forecast fallen in the night, Loots says
The heaviest falls were recorded on Arthur's Pass, Haast and Franz Josef, with about 30mm in the last six hours.
Heavy rain showers were in effect at 6am tomorrow at Westland, Buller, Nelson and north and west of Marlborough, also for the Tararua Range, the eastern ranges of Plenty Bay and the Gisborne chains.
Canterbury could also be affected by gusts of wind up to 120 km / h
. moderate risk of thunderstorms for northwestern Nelson, north Wellington, Kapiti Coast, Horowhenua, Taranaki and Waitomo Monday morning.
These thunderstorms could be accompanied by heavy localized rains and small hail, strong bursts of 90-110km / h tornadoes.
Fiordland, Westland and B uller could also see similar thunderstorms before dawn.
In the afternoon a cold front would ascend the South Island up to # 39 in Christchurch around midnight, bringing a cold
Any rain over 600m would snow, adding to the snow warnings of the road already in effect Sunday night until 22h tonight for the Desert Rd ( SH1), Lewis Pass (SH7), Arthur's Pass (SH73), The Porters Pass (SH73), the Lindis Pass (SH8), the Crown Range Rd and the Milford Rd (SH94).
The worst time of the week was expected today, but the disrupted flow would continue until Thursday, said Loots. 19659007] Many road snow warnings in effect right now.
