Your weather: Wet Saturday in the south reaching north by here Sunday

A wet weekend is on the cards for some with a front going up the South Island tonight and smothering the North Island Sunday.

In the North Island, rain will only hit the low areas on Saturday night. Matthew Ford said today that the time of the North Island was relatively stable, with only a few showers in the western regions.

A thick layer of fog was formed during the night of Waikato across the northernmost regions. in Abundance Bay, after a band of rain crossing the North Island, followed by clear skies.

Temperatures were relatively mild during the night, at least for the winter, with the coldest temperatures -5C at Pukaki in the high country of Canterbury, -4C at Middlemarch in Central Otago and -3C at Dunedin Airport

On Tuesday, westerly to southwesterly winds are expected to weaken over the country, with showers dropping.

Cooler temperatures were expected on the North Island early next week.
