The war on glasses led to creative solutions for selfie cameras, but the goal has clearly been to find a way to hide the camera under the screen. This technology exists and is slowly coming to the market, and this week Oppo presents a new version of its sub-screen camera that does not compromise too much on the quality of the photos.
Oppo’s “next generation” version of under-screen camera technology focuses on one primary lens. This makes the camera essentially invisible because, with earlier versions of this technology, there is a marked difference in the quality of the screen when it passes over the camera’s sensor. Oppo says this latest version has “almost no visual difference” in everyday use. An example, illustrated below, relates to a book reading application where a difference in the quality of the screen would be immediately noticeable.
How is it going ? Oppo says this latest version of an under-display camera maintains the pixel density of 400 ppi on this part of the screen like the rest of the OLED panel.
Despite the denser panel, however, it doesn’t seem like it detracts much from the image quality. A sample image provided by Oppo shows an image that is certainly not free from flaws, but is certainly passable, at least in ideal lighting, as the demo showed.
