Next-gen Toyota 86 front could be revealed in design trademark

Despite the debut of the new Subaru BRZ, Toyota has been very silent on the future of the next generation 86. A new design trademark filing in Australia could give us a first look at the front bumper of the new sports coupe.

IP Australia shows the owners of this design like Subaru and Toyota. Since the 86 and the BRZ are a joint venture between these automakers, it makes sense that they both own this brand. They filed the documents on October 30, 2020, and the office released the information on January 18.

The pictures also show the lower fascia with the cutouts for the headlights. The grid has a trapezoidal shape with the side widening from top to bottom. The hexagonal mesh is in the center. The sharp, narrow corner entrances have horizontal strakes inside their openings.

The comparison above shows the new BRZ and two Toyota and Subaru depots for the front fairings. Seeing them all together, it’s clear that the newly recorded piece has some significant differences from the BRZ’s. Most notably, the grille is taller and has a rounder outline compared to the sharper edges of the other design.

While this design belonging to the Toyota 86 appears to be the most likely outcome, we cannot entirely rule out that this design may be for the hotter BRZ which is in a recent spy video. The vehicle in this clip was under camouflage and did not appear to be wearing this before. The dev team might have just kept things a secret, however.

While Toyota isn’t talking about the new 86 just yet, the 2022 BRZ will go on sale in the United States in the fall. Since the two models are so similar, we would expect them to hit showrooms around the same time.
