Black Monday, the day that NFL head coaches are often shown the door, was not so dark this year. But that was only because so many coaches had already been made redundant.
Doug Marrone of the Jaguars was the first to learn of his fate on Monday morning, the news confirmed in a statement from Jacksonville owner Shad Khan.
Marrone joined Adam Gase from the Jets, who lost his job Sunday, and three coaches who didn’t even make it through the season: Bill O’Brien of the Houston Texans, Dan Quinn of the Atlanta Falcons and Matt Patricia of the Detroit. The Lions.

Doug Marrone, Jaguars
The Jaguars won their first game of the season against the Colts, triggering a wave of Minshew Madness headlines over the triumph of their colorful quarterback, Gardner Minshew. They then lost 15 straight games. It marked the end of the line for Marrone, the former Buffalo Bills head coach who took the Jaguars to the AFC championship game in his first season but was 12-36 since. Adam Gase, Jets
Gase was sacked on Sunday, shortly after the Jets lost to the Patriots. The team ended the season 2-14 after a 0-13 start. Gase was expected to be an offensive guru, but he was 9-23 in both seasons, and young quarterback Sam Darnold struggled. With the Browns in the playoffs after 17 years, the Jets now have the longest streak of the playoffs, 10 seasons. The next longest playoff drought is five.
Mid-season shots
Three head coaches didn’t even make it to week 17.
Bill o’brien was sacked by the Texans after a 0-4 start. O’Brien was 52-48 with four playoff appearances and two playoff wins, and had won the AFC South four of the previous five seasons. But his alignment as chief executive has not produced the success needed to keep his job.
Dan Quinn was sacked by the Falcons after two 7-9 seasons and then a 0-5 start for this one. In more than five seasons, he was 43-42 with two playoff appearances and one loss to the 2016 Patriots in the Super Bowl.
Matt patricia was fired by the Lions after a loss at Thanksgiving. In two seasons and more, he was 13-29-1. The Lions finished 5-11 and are still looking for their second playoff win since 1957.
Who’s next?
Four other teams with bad records are not expected to fire their head coaches.
The Bengals (4-11-1) have had an exciting season with rookie quarterback Joe Burrow, but despite the poor record, the team said on Monday they would not fire the coach. Zac Taylor.
Doug pederson is still revered in Philadelphia for his Super Bowl season in 2017, and despite some grunts in his city and in his locker room, he should keep his job even though the Eagles finished 4-11-1 in a terrible division.
The Panthers and Broncos were 5-11 this season, but Matt Rhule and Vic Fangio are likely to remain as well.
The Chargers may be a different story: While their record is a bit better than these teams, they could shoot Anthony lynn, who followed a 12-4 season in 2018 with records of 5-11 and 7-9.
The Chargers position can be especially appealing to jobless coaches due to the emergence of rookie quarterback Justin Herbert and the team’s promising 4-0.
