INDIANAPOLIS – Friday was a great day at the NFL, where almost all skillful players spoke to the media.
All wide receivers were among them and many said they had already met the Patriots. This is not surprising considering that Julian Edelman is under contract for 2019 at the end of last season.
It should be noted that at the time of Bill Belichick, the Patriots had never written a score as high as the number 36 and, since 2012, have written only one of the top 100. This shows that they see the value more deeply in the project.
With this in mind, here are five recipients to watch from the point of view of the Patriots.
Deebo Samuel, South Carolina – Samuel is one of the most versatile receivers, which the Patriots like. He also kicks back, adding to his value and potential intrigue in New England. The product of South Carolina should be the subject of series 2 or 3, so it would be potentially contrary to the trend observed under Belichick.
Samuel said he met the Patriots on his first day at Indy.
JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Stanford – Arcega-Whiteside is another option if the Patriots were to break the trend and choose a high catcher, as he also plans for rounds 2 or 3. He is a complete athlete who played basketball during high school, which it is not the case. A surprise, since both his parents played professionally in Europe, but football is his favorite sport.
Stanford's product had an excellent season in 2018, recording 63 assists and 14 touchdowns. He also met the Patriots at the combine.
Hunter Renfrow, Clemson – This is not a surprise, he has recently been in contact with the Patriots, as he has been mentioned in recent seasons during almost every game of Clemson. It seems to have all the features of a Patriot slot machine receiver: gritty, sturdy and able to make clutch captures. He finished his university career with 186 receptions for 2,133 yards and 15 touchdowns.
It is worth noting that one of his mentors is Adam Humphries, free agent, and that both share the same agent. Renfrow is expected to participate in the middle round at the end, which is in the wheelhouse of the Patriots.
Andy Isabella, UMass – Given the local connection and her ability to play in the slot, Isabella is a player who will often be projected on the Patriots in the coming weeks. For now, he makes his choice mid-term, but if he managed very well this weekend and during his professional day, he could really rise in rank.
As a senior team this fall, he finished with 102 catches, an incredible 1,698 yards and 13 touchdowns, which is not bad considering he only had two catches in the first year. He is also working with Randy Moss as he prepares for the repechage.
Jakobi Meyers, State of NC – Meyers went from quarterback to wide receiver before the 2016 season and the transfer paid off. He finished last season with a school record of 92 catches, 1,047 yards and four touchdowns. He spoke of his ability to play both inside and out, which will obviously make him more attractive.
Given that he has only a few years to his job, he certainly has room to grow, which could be a good thing considering his productivity this year. As a mid-to-late player, he could possibly be worth the Patriots shot.
