The first round of the NFL 2019 draft was marked by a run against the defense. Seven of Nashville's top ten selections were on that side of the ball.

The New York Giants grabbed the second quarter of the first lap in 6th place, taking Duke's Daniel Jones as potential heir to Eli Manning. Jacksonville selected Kentucky defensive team Josh Allen to seventh, before the Detroit Lions seized Iowa, T.J. Hockenson with the eighth overall pick.

Murray becomes the 22nd Heisman Trophy to be chosen with the first choice. He and his teammate Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma are the first two players from the same university to have been selected for the first time in the overall rankings in consecutive years since Ron Yary and OJ Simpson were # 1 in the USC in 1968 and 1969, respectively. (Mayfield was selected by the Cleveland Browns with first choice last year).

Murray's selection also marked the first time, the following year, that the Heisman Trophy winners were named # 1 year after year after winning the award from Bo Jackson and Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and 1987.
