Six simple words are enough to dissuade a team from taking into account something risky in the NFL draft: the Browns have tried three times.
Yuck! It does not matter!
Perhaps no NFL franchise in the 2000s had a worse record in the repechage than the Browns, who used the second of two first-round picks a quarter three times in the last 12 events .
Each time resulted a disaster.

Dave Gettleman of the New York Giants had to write a Hall of Famer with the # 2 pick, so he took Saquon Barkley in 2018.
And although this story does not mean it will be a disaster if the Giants opt for a quarterback with choice # 6 and only one with choice # 17 is at least a warning.
The Giants and the Browns already share enough company.
Under the direction of two CEOs – John Dorsey of the Browns and Dave Gettleman of the Giants – whose relationships spanned nearly 40 years, the teams have recently completed two operations involving Odell Beckham, Olivier Vernon, Kevin Zeitler and Jabrill Peppers, as well as many draft picks, including # 17.
They are tied for the most losses in losses in the last two combined NFL seasons (24). They formed No. 1 (Baker Mayfield Browns) and No. 2 (Saquon Barkley Giants) in 2018. These are the two places where Giants coach Pat Shurmur launched the pitches of his career.
But here's a glimpse of the results of the Browns who are delaying their choice of quarterback, a connection that the Giants do not want:
2007:
No 3 OT Joe Thomas: Thomas goes to the Hall of Fame one day. The Pro Bowler, who has played ten times, played 10,363 consecutive shots to start his career, but retired without ever playing in the playoffs after an 11th season curtailed by injury.
No 22 QB Brady Quinn: Quinn was the second quarterback, after first overall pick, Jamarcus Russell. He was 3-9 as a starter for the Browns and was out of the NFL after four seasons. Eight choices between # 21 and # 32 went to at least one Pro Bowl.
2012:
No. 3 RB Trent Richardson: Quarterback Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III took turns facing Richardson, who had 950 yards and 11 rookies as a rookie. He played two games the following season and was traded to the Colts, where he racked up 978 yards in both seasons. He played in the American Football Alliance earlier this year.
No 22 QB Brandon Weeden: With Shurmur as head coach, the Browns failed to get the RGIII and passed Ryan Tannehill (No. 8 to Dolphins) to take Richardson. But they turned around with Weeden, a 28-year-old former minor league baseball player. He went 5-15 in two years for the Browns before being cut.
2014:
No 8 CB Justin Gilbert: Each selection of the number 5-17 has made at least one Pro Bowl – some are on a Hall of Fame trail like Zack Martin, Beckham and Aaron Donald – with the exception of Gilbert. He had 42 tackles and an interception in 35 career games, including 23 with the Browns. He was fired by the Steelers and suspended for one year for violating the NFL's drug policy in 2017.
No. 22 QB Johnny Manziel: The winner of the Heisman Trophy actually made fewer starts than Quinn and Weeden. He played 2 to 6 as a starter and his teammates questioned his commitment. He was the subject of a domestic violence investigation and was released in 2015 to disregard Brown's expectations on and off the field. He played in the Canadian Football League and AAF.
What is as bad as this record? In 2017, the Browns had the # 1 choice and three top-seeded players, but they let Pro Bowlers Deshaun Watson (Texans), Mitchell Trubisky (Rams) and MVP Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs).
It seems like they finally have their franchise quarter by finally using their first pick from several first-round selections on Mayfield in 2018. Denback Cornerz Denzel Ward was the other.
Do not say you're not warned, Giants.
