The Browns disagreed with officials’ decision not to expel Chiefs assistant coach Greg Lewis. Of course, they won’t agree with the NFL’s decision not to fine the running backs coach.
The NFL fined Browns safety Ronnie Harrison $ 12,128 for his role in an altercation with Hill. Hill only received one warning, reports Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.
Hill was advised that any subsequent violation of Rule 13, Section 8 would result in disciplinary action. The NFL found that “Lewis’s actions were not deemed worthy of a fine,” according to Pelissero.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said this week that the teams received a league note about the behavior on the sidelines. The league reminded them that “non-player staff of a club (e.g. management staff, coaches, coaches, equipment staff) are prohibited from having unnecessary physical contact with or direct abusive, threatening or insulting language or gestures towards opponents, game officials, or representatives of the League Penalty: Loss of 15 yards.
The league’s treatment of Hill is curious at best as it pushed Harrison first. Harrison then pushed back. Originally, officials only penalized Hill, but an appeal from the league office resulted in a compensatory penalty for Harrison and his expulsion.
Network rules analysts, including NBC’s Terry McAulay, disagreed.
“On the pitch penalize both, which results in a lag, and after the fact the league can do as it sees fit,” McAulay tweeted. “The result on the pitch seemed unfair at best.
As Browns center and NFLPA president JC Tretter noted this week, “I would expect the coach to be held at the same level, if not higher than Ronnie.”
“We can’t let opposing coaches get hold of opposing players,” Tretter said. “I don’t think there is a place for that in this league.
