With Nick Sirianni replacing Doug Pederson as the Eagles’ head coach, it is assumed that Carson Wentz will definitely be back with Philadelphia in 2021. But is that really the case?
Former Eagles president Joe Banner recently spoke about how he believes Wentz isn’t necessarily guaranteed to return. Mike Garafolo, an NFL insider, expressed a similar sentiment during his interview with Angelo Cataldi on Monday at the SportsRadio 94WIP Morning Show:
“The short answer is no. No, but let’s see,” Garafolo said when asked if Pederson’s departure meant Wentz would be back. “I brought it up when Doug was fired and everyone said that “Well that means Carson Wentz is back”… No. There’s more to that. He’s a guy who I am told feels a little bit bad about his relationship with the whole organization. A lot of people. There are a lot of hurt feelings on his side with the way this has all been handled. I’m not saying it’s justified or not justified, I’m just telling you that I understand it’s is more than the head coach to him. There are even more conversations to be had. When I say Sirianni is going to talk to him, remember the front office is going to talk to him and see if they can work on their feelings and work on that and see if they can come back to the same page. ”
It certainly looks like there are some fence repairs to be done here.
On the one hand, I can’t fault Wentz for feeling a certain way of thinking that the Eagles are drafting Jalen Hurts. We criticized the Eagles for undermining their franchise quarterback after that pick. The organization has undoubtedly let down Wentz in some ways.
On the flip side, Wentz played pretty much the worst starter at his position in the NFL last year. I can absolutely fault him for lacking in commitment to a team that has repeatedly pampered him and granted him a $ 128 million contract extension. Wentz has undoubtedly let down the organization in some ways.
Like, what exactly is Wentz looking for here? Does he want the Eagles to fully commit to him as a starter and trade Hurts? He shouldn’t be able to make those kinds of demands, especially after the terrible season he’s been through.
The reports we’ve heard of Wentz – who turned down the chance to put his own words there – since being benched do NOT portray a player who has been humiliated by his demotion. On the contrary, all indications seem to indicate that he doesn’t think he’s part of the problem, which is downright pathetic. It shouldn’t take convincing and harsh concessions to convince Wentz to stay in Philadelphia.
Maybe the Eagles aren’t really committed to Wentz and they had better move on. Their actions and words so far indicate otherwise.
But we’ll just have to see what happens to their quarterback situation.
