ESPN brings back NFL Primetime … .but you will not be able to watch the traditional channel.
According to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal and confirmed by ESPN, ESPN is bringing Primetime back next Sunday, but it will only be available after the ESPN + paywall. Primetime will air at 7:30 pm on Sunday and will be available on request until Wednesday evening.
Chris Berman and Tom Jackson will come back (thankfully, because it would not really be Primetime without them) to call the highlights, and for ESPN, the Primetime broadcast will be updated after Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football with highlights of these. games, commented by Scott Van Pelt and Joe Tessitore, respectively.
This is the third original program on ESPN + focused on the NFL, and the first program not hosted by Peyton Manning (Detail and Peyton's Places being the other two, and I guess you could say that Draft Academy is also focused on NFL).
I do not think anybody would complain too much (except that it's only available behind the paywall) and given the positive reaction to the meeting of Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann on SportsCenter from last week, ESPN clearly realizes that returning to nostalgia well is an easy way to generate goodwill and positive feedback from viewers.
