NFL rumors: 49ers ‘very interested’ in Deshaun Watson, ‘highs’ on Sam Darnold

The quarterback speculation has taken control of Super Bowl LV, and the 49ers find themselves right on target.

A year after Jimmy Garoppolo helped lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl, San Francisco may be looking to take another direction in the job. This offseason should see an unprecedented number of QBs find new homes, and Garoppolo could be one of them. The 49ers would still have their eyes on what’s considered the biggest prize in the trading market right now.

“I can tell you the 49ers, the Panthers (are) some of the teams very interested in Deshaun Watson, as are the Jets,” CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora said on Sunday on the Super’s pre-game show. Bowl.

Watson has made it clear he wants to leave Houston this offseason. However, the Texans would still tell teams that they won’t trade the star quarterback. Plus, they naturally want a king’s ransom for the 25-year-old.

Texans would would like at least two first, two seconds and two young starters in defense in a Watson rally.

If the 49ers think it’s too much, Kyle Shanahan would love another young QB who may become available soon.

“Sources tell me 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan (is) very high on Sam Darnold,” La Canfora also said. “If it’s a game, follow me here, the 49ers would trade Jimmy Garoppolo, and sources tell me Bill Belichick would love to have a Jimmy G reunion in New England.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday morning that several teams have been looking for a possible trade for Darnold, and the Jets are not turning down calls while deciding their QB’s future. Former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is now the head coach of the Jets, and the two sides could strike a deal to bring Darnold to Santa Clara.

Darnold has been far from great in his first three years in the league. The former No.3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft completed just 59.8% of his passes, resulting in 45 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. But he’s six years younger than Garoppolo and a lot cheaper. His contract costs just $ 4.7 million next season, which would help the 49ers sign more players.

Shanahan might very well think Darnold can still be a franchise quarterback in the right system, especially with weapons like George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel. A Jimmy G reunion in New England isn’t too easy, but never say never.

A lot can happen in the next month or so. These rumors are not going away any time soon. The stove is just starting to heat up.
