NFL rumors: bears’ solidly ‘in draw for Lions’ Matthew Stafford

The Bears are in the heat of the Matthew Stafford draw, according to NFL insider Albert Breer.

In a periscope on Saturday, Breer reported that the Bears were one of seven teams “firmly engaged” in trade talks for the longtime Lions quarterback, adding that interest in Stafford was strong during the last week.

The Washington football team, the Panthers, Patriots, Colts, 49ers and Rams are the other teams involved, according to Breer. He added that he thinks Stafford would like to go to California, but he is “not sure” if the 32-year-old will end up with the 49ers or the Rams.

“I think where he would prefer to go might not be the best deal the Lions are giving him,” said Breer.

According to Breer, Detroit has spoken about trades for his quarterback at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama this week and would like to move him ahead of the Super Bowl. The return could be a first-round pick or a first-round pick and more, said Breer.

Stafford, Detroit’s first overall pick in 2009, and the Lions have mutually agreed to go their separate ways this offseason after 11 seasons together. He’s under contract for two more seasons, with caps of $ 20 million in 2021 and $ 23 million in 2022.
