While the Patriots’ first season after Tom Brady’s departure didn’t go as planned, the final results didn’t stop head coach Bill Belichick from praising starting quarterback Cam Newton.
According to Ben Volin from The Boston Globe, Belichick shone about Newton during the offseason, offering rave reviews of the veteran quarterback’s efforts put forward during the 2020 campaign. Belichick’s only area of concern regarding Newton’s performance is the dwindling performance. strength of his arms. Newton has undergone several projection shoulder surgeries in recent years.
Newton, who turns 32 in May and is currently a free agent, started every game except one for New England last season, going 7-8 as a starter. He completed 65.8% of his passes for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also added 592 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns.
Belichick would have liked to coach Newton, however, and Volin reports that a reunion in 2021 wouldn’t be a surprise. The Patriots could also select a quarterback in the draft this year and currently hold the 15th pick.
Check out the latest NFL news and notes:
- Volin also reports that, despite comments from 49ers general manager John Lynch, many in the league still expect the team to make quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo available in a trade.
