NFL rumors: Cardinals’ Chandler Jones asked for offseason trade

One of the 49ers’ main rivals in NFC West wants to retire, as All-Pro pass carrier Chandler Jones called for a trade from the Arizona Cardinals, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Sunday morning citing sources of the league.

All-Pro pass carrier Chandler Jones has asked the Arizona Cardinals for a trade this offseason, sources say. Jones is unhappy with his contract and his future with the team. The Cardinals don’t want to trade him and expect him to show up at camp. But certainly a situation to watch out for.

Jones is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $ 15 million in 2021. The 31-year-old has just had bicep surgery, but has suffered at least 13 sacks in each of his last three seasons in good health before being limited to just five games in 2020.

Fowler reported that the Cardinals have no interest in moving the three-time defenseman from the Pro Bowl and expect him to play the final year of his contract in Arizona this season.

Jones has played more games against the 49ers than any other during his NFL career and has seven sacks on the San Francisco quarterbacks in his nine-year NFL career.

Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers offensive line probably wouldn’t shed a tear if Jones ended up being moved before the start of the season, but it looks like Arizona has no interest in trading him at this point.
