NFL rumors: Insiders don’t seem to agree on Carson Wentz’s future as Eagle

With a head coach finally hired in Nick Sirianni, the Eagles’ biggest question now officially is what to do with Carson Wentz, the former (and possibly future?) Franchise quarterback who lost his starting job last season to rookie Jalen Hurts.

Wentz was apparently unhappy with his bench and seemed to disagree with former head coach Doug Pederson. With Pederson gone and Sirianni in it, will Wentz be ready to iron out his differences with the organization?

And also … do the Eagles still want Wentz as QB1?

If you listen to some of the hottest NFL reporters these days, your guess sounds as good as theirs.

On Monday two very strong and knowledgeable football journalists offered what they had heard about the situation in Wentz.

First up, Mike Garafolo from NFL Network, per 94WIP:

“I brought it up when Doug got fired and everybody said, ‘Well that means Carson Wentz is back. “… No. There’s more to that.”

Then, FOX Sports Jay Glazer:

“I think the Eagles are going to try to make it work with Carson Wentz, so I don’t think he’s going to be there, per se.”

Very interesting, but also a little confusing.

It appears, for now, that the Eagles are exerting more pressure to get things right with Wentz if the two teams want to reconcile by next season. Glazer’s report makes it look like the Eagles want Wentz back, while Garafolo’s report makes Wentz still look bitter, while leaving the Eagles’ involvement in the relationship uncertain.

These next steps can take place in several ways.

The Eagles could contact Wentz and say they still want him to be the starting quarterback, and Wentz could explain that he still wants to be here.

The Eagles could contact Wentz and say they still want him to be the starting quarterback, but Wentz couldn’t want to mend the relationship and ultimately ask for a trade.

Or the Eagles could contact Wentz, say they still want him in Philly but not guarantee the QB1 job, and see how Wentz reacts.

It’s all fascinating, and it seems no one – not NFL insiders, and maybe not even Wentz or the Eagles – knows exactly what’s coming next.
