The Eagles will be in Indianapolis this week for the NFL Combine, hoping to find a number of different players to meet the needs of their roster. One of the main needs is a deep threat, and an intriguing name might be available to them via the trade.
according to Tony Pauline from DraftAnalyst.com, the Cincinnati Bengals are interested in commercial receiver John Ross and will present offers for the receiver at the Combine this week.
Ross was the ninth pick in the 2017 NFL draft by the Bengals. He was disappointed by the Bengals, making only 21 catches in two seasons for 210 yards and seven touchdowns. Considered a serious threat from Washington and setting a combined record with a 40-yard run time of 4.22 seconds, Ross averaged only 10.0 yards per career reception.
Despite its slow start, however, there are many reasons to believe that the Eagles will be interested and that it would be wise to do something for the quick receiver.
Without a doubt, the greatest need of Eagles in attack is speed. Jordan Matthews was their best threat last season, and their attempts to solve the problem through the project and the free agency – Mike Wallace, Torrey Smith, Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson – were unsuccessful. By adding a deep threat, this off season must be at the top of their to-do list if they want to have a better offense in 2019 than they did for the majority of 2018.
Ross could be a great option, low risk and very profitable. The Eagles were very interested in the fact that Ross came out of Washington, because he made him come for an official visit to Philadelphia and prepared him for his Pro Day. Ross was a dynamic player in his final year at the university, totaling 81 catches for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns. He averaged 14.2 yards per jack.
The question is to what extent Ross's struggles with the Bengals have changed the opinion of the Eagles. On one side, the Bengals have been a disaster in the past two seasons. So it is possible that Ross' troubles have more to do with being in Cinncinati than with a bad player. With a boring attack and a terrible quarterback, it is not surprising that Ross had difficulties there. However, it is undeniable that 21 shots in 16 games are worrisome, especially considering that they were mostly winners.
The price asked to Ross could decide if the Eagles are interested and if an agreement is reached. With a cap of only $ 2 million this year, bringing in Ross and seeing if he can reverse the situation in the Eagles offense makes perfect sense, especially if it only takes the choice of a player apart whole or a minor role. With two fourth-round picks, the Eagles may decide to try his luck against Ross rather than try his luck on a fourth-round rookie.
If they do, it will be a wise decision and a risk to take.
