That’s what New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas must decide for quarterback Sam Darnold.
If he stays, it means the Jets are passing trading for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.
It also means the Jets will likely advance to second pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on a QB.
If Darnold goes, the Jets restart at quarterback just three years after selecting Darnold with the No.3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
SI’s Albert Breer reports that the Jets have no shortage of options.
I believe Sam Darnold is on the line. First off, what I know: Four teams called the Jets to inquire about Darnold’s availability. Everyone was greeted with an interesting response, saying the team, with their new coaching staff gaining a foothold, are still evaluating the quarterback position. This is of course not a “no”. And it is true that new offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur and his lieutenants have taken Jets general manager Joe Douglas and his scouts through all the ins and outs of what they schematically want and what they individually look for in players. . Now for what I’m thinking: Douglas and his scout mastermind Rex Hogan, Phil Savage and Chad Alexander had time to get a really good look at BYU’s Zach Wilson, Ohio State’s Justin Fields and Trey Lance from North Dakota State, and while they don’t yet know them as well as they’ll need to in April, the fact that treating Darnold is a consideration tells you they’re at least intrigued. by something there. What’s interesting is that Darnold, 23, is just two years older than Fields and Wilson, and three years older than Lance. And it would be very easy for another to look at Darnold and the situation he was in, and deduce that the still raw talent that he has may very well be reaped. Which could then lead to Douglas having the ability to get even more draft capital to work with to surround a quarterback caught with the second pick. That’s, of course, assuming Deshaun Watson isn’t in the game in a few weeks. Either way, the Jets are in a decent place here no matter where they decide to go. And now? Right now, if I’m a team that prefers Darnold to, say, (Marcus) Mariota or (Carson) Wentz, I probably want to make a big quarterback move.
The next move on the QB carousel could come as early as Tuesday, with several reports indicating the Philadelphia Eagles could be close to negotiating Carson Wentz.
