INDIANAPOLIS – It started as a stupid idiot, based on an old quote, according to which the Cardinals of Arizona were sort of aiming for the Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the overall No. 1 pick in this year's NFL project, and were ready to give up Josh Rosen, the quarterback took the 10th place in the general standings less than a year ago. For weeks, everyone – including the cardinals – seemed to consider it ridiculous.
Now, however, many NFL people think it's not so ridiculous at all. And that, of course, is remarkable for the giants.
In fact, many NFL sources, from scouts to agents to team leaders, told SNY this week at the NFL Scouting Combine that they thought the Cardinals were really targeting Murray with the No. 1 choice. Of course, none of them were certain, and the confidence of the cards was not ready to turn his head.
But speculation only grew on Wednesday when Cardinals general manager Steve Keim was questioned whether Rosen was the Cardinals' quarterback. He replied as follows:
"Yes," Keim said. "He is right now, of course."
It was the "present moment" that set the combine on fire and the media looked for Kliff Kingsbury's video that said about Murray: "I would take it with the first choice in the rough draft, if I could . Of course, Kingsbury was then at Texas Tech, and he did not even imagine he would soon be the Cardinals' coach, who held that first choice.
It may have been a coincidence, but it ensured that Kingsbury and Murray would be linked at least until the project began on April 25th.
"Yes, I understand why and how the circumstances unfolded," he said on Wednesday. "It was before a college match and obviously you're thinking of Kyler's world as a player and as a person, but the timing is pretty unique."
Indeed, it has become an even bigger story since the Murray star has climbed into the NFL ranks since he made the decision to enter the NFL draft. Formerly regarded by some as a second-round player because of his size, he was 5-10 1/8 and a solid 207 pounds on Wednesday. Breaking barriers of 5 to 10 pounds and 200 pounds has appeased the minds of some NFL staff.
Now, even those who do not believe that the Cardinals will replace him with the No. 1, seem convinced that he has a chance to overtake those of the Ohio State. Dwayne Haskins, who has long been considered the best quarterback prospect in this project. Given that "shifts are always going higher than expected," as one NFL source said, they could both be in the Top 5.
It is even likely that the Cardinals receive some calls from teams interested in replacing it with the first choice. But no one thinks the Cards will want to give this recovery.
"I really think it's going to be No. 1," said a league source. "It's exactly what Kingsbury wants to do there."
"It's a perfect match," said another source. "And maybe they can also deal with Rosen."
The Murray Mobile would seem to be an ideal choice for Kingsbury 's "Air Raid" offensive, which needs a fast and mobile quarterback capable of playing running. What is not clear, is what they could get for Rosen, who has experienced difficulties as a rookie. Given the high class level among the quarterbacks in last year 's draft, several teams may be interested.
And yes, the giants could be one.
But it all depends on Murray's first place, which could only be speculation while there is only eight weeks left before the project. For many players in the league, however, this assumption is much more believable than it was a few weeks ago.
