ESPN’s Bill Barnwell was the subject of a series of business proposals, 17 to be precise, that involved Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson. Barnwell had some wild trades in this article that were entertaining. One involved a three-team trade where the 49ers landed Aaron Rodgers after sending No.12, a first-round pick in 22, a second-round pick in 22, and Jimmy Garoppolo (to the Patriots.)
It was the 17th scenario and the most unlikely considering Green Bay plans to keep Rodgers for at least another season.
Here’s Barnwell’s third storyline where Watson ended up in the Bay Area:
49ers send: 12th overall pick in 2021, first and second round pick in 2022 (at Texans), third round pick in 2023, S Tarvarius Moore, QB Jimmy Garoppolo (at Jets)
The jets send: QB Sam Darnold (at Texans), 2022 fifth-round pick (at 49ers)
Texans send: QB Deshaun Watson (up to 49ers)
There’s a lot going on here, and to land Watson, but giving up just two first-round picks to land a 25-year-old Top 3 quarterback with a friendly contract would be a no-brainer for San Francisco.
Here’s what Barnwell had to say about trading:
The 49ers can credibly suggest that they are Super Bowl contenders if they add Watson, who would step into a friendly quarterback program with guns galore. They might be able to add a passer on a rookie deal, but Watson would be a bet they can beat anyone on offense. It would be a huge package, including four draft picks and two veterans, but general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan have been quick to pay more than the odds for the guys they want. If they want Watson, they won’t let a price tag get in their way.
Garoppolo has two years and about $ 50.4 million left on his contract, and given his recent injury history, he doesn’t have much business value beyond a mid-range pick. He’s not of much use to a rebuilding Texas team, although Caserio & Co. have certainly known him from their time in New England. The Jets seem like a curious choice, but Robert Saleh just spent three years with Garoppolo (and Moore) in San Francisco. The Jets could buy cheap on Garoppolo if they don’t like any of the quarterbacks in the April draft class.
Before pointing out that the 49ers made the Super Bowl with Garoppolo, understand that the Niners won’t be doing another Super Bowl where Jimmy G throws the ball eight times in the NFC Championship game. It’s living in a fantasy. If Jimmy comes back, he’s going to have to play.
Watson feels like a pipedream, but I wouldn’t rule him out completely. You have to imagine the 49ers made an offer to Houston, as most teams did. I’ve seen “Twitter 49ers” wonder if Watson is worth it or even an upgrade from what’s on the list right now, and all I can do is laugh.
Watson and I can’t stress this enough, it’s a significant upgrade from 95% of NFL quarterbacks. There is Patrick Mahomes, then there is Watson. For my money, Watson is the second best quarterback in the NFL. When you have the opportunity to get any of these types, you get them.
It wouldn’t be the team rolling the dice. It’s the same with Matthew Stafford. When you know what you’re getting, it becomes a lot easier to pull the trigger. Four years of good Stafford quarterback play is worthy of a first-round pick. Eight years of Watson are worth two first-round picks.
