If the Lions front office was looking for a reason to fire Matt Patricia, they might have found one on Sunday. In one of the worst performances of any team this season, the Lions seemed to have simply abandoned Patricia in the team’s 20-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
If you’re wondering how hot Patricia’s hotplate is in Detroit, just open your oven before you cook your turkey on Thanksgiving and you’ve got a good idea. In that embarrassing loss, the attack couldn’t move the ball, the defense couldn’t stop a former XFL quarterback (PJ Walker) and it all led to the Lions being shut out for the first time. times since 2009.
The mistakes started early for Detroit, with one of the uglier ones on a shotgun snap from Frank Ragnow to Matthew Stafford in the first quarter. On the play, Ragnow bypassed the snap, and Stafford – who had had a sore thumb all week – just couldn’t hold on to it, and ultimately the Panthers ended up with the ball.
If there was a play that embodied Lions Day, it sure was it.
It’s almost a blessing to Stafford that the snap didn’t hit him, because every time the ball found its way into his hands, it was destroyed. The Lions quarterback was sacked five times and had to deal with constant pressure from a Panthers defense that pushed the Lions offensive line to a turnstile at a concert where all tickets were free.
The Lions just couldn’t do anything on offense, and the few times they did, Patricia punted the readers down. In two consecutive practices in the second quarter, the Lions TONED the ball from Carolina territory. Patricia should have shown some confidence in his offense and gone for it, because in the worst case scenario he was returning her to a Panthers offense led by a former QB XFL. Instead, he pitched both times and the Lions would never threaten to score a touchdown in this game.
The Lions haven’t reached the red zone once and only rolled inside the Carolina 30-yard line once. It was a game the Lions had to win and they fell prone.
The Lions were seated at 4-5 heading into Sunday and they even looked like they had a chance to get back into the NFC playoff race, but that won’t happen now. The only question that seems to remain in Detroit is whether or not Patricia will survive the season.
