A week after yielding 209 yards to Scott McCaffrey, the Rams defense faces a recurring nightmare.
In three games with Los Angeles (including the playoffs), Alvin Kamara averaged more than 138 yards in scrimmage and scored five times.
He had a total of 169 yards of offense in a first week win over Houston, which was impossible to beat.
It's hard to envision the Rams' win if they do not find a solution to one of the best backs in the NFL.
What can Brown do for you?
Sean McVay insisted this week that Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown, the Rams, were not a model for 2019.
"To say we wanted to get out of (Caroline) with these guys, basically getting the same number of staves, that's not the case at all," said the head coach Monday.
It may not have been his design, but it was safe, it was effective, as Brown scored two goals and Gurley had 89 yards in nine touchdowns to mark the win.
Despite all that has been written about the fact that Darrell Henderson was chosen as a "change of pace" to complete Gurley, I actually think that Henderson looks more like Gurley than he is different. Brown provided the variety (not to mention the experience), and it was great to see him validating the confidence of the coaching staff in the fact that he would recover from this collarbone injury in late 2018.
Gurley will play his 60th game in the NFL on Sunday. He will face the Saints with 56 career touchdowns, making him an eighth in the history of the league over this period. Another this weekend would bring him closer to Lance Alworth for seventh overall.
For his 46 touchdowns, Walter Payton would be tied for 12th. Two would match our 11th Maurice Jones-Drew. Jim Brown holds the NFL mark with 57 touchdowns in his first 60 games; Eric Dickerson is rushed for 53 scores to open his career.
The game I love most this week is Cooper Kupp versus P.J. Williams in the slot.
After a sprained knee, Kupp scored in the loss to Week 9 in New Orleans before undergoing an end-of-season ACL the following week against the Seahawks.
Now, he will play on the Coliseum surface for the first time since this contactless injury, and what effect will the sound have to hear "Coooooop" from home?
Kupp was superb against the Panthers, as three of his seven receptions moved the chains in third place.
Clean up and win on SPTMS
The opening match at Carolina was the only occasion where the Rams were beaten out by special teams. A week later, I still do not know what to do with it.
One out-of-bounds kick, one blocked punt, one foot, one missed goal and one punt within the Rams' five-yard line.
Fortunately, Robert Woods and the team's hands got the kickoff and the win.
But in a match that will almost certainly fall in the wire, these misunderstandings can not occur against the Saints, who tout the NFL special-purpose team player of the week at Will Lutz, fresh out of a field of play. 58-yard winning career goal as time has lapsed to beat the Texans.
