The NHL has informed the NHL Players Association of its decision not to reopen the collective bargaining agreement in effect on Friday.

The news arrives two days before the league's deadline for exiting the current CBA in 2020. The NHLPA has until September 15 to withdraw.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman made a statement on this issue.

"Given the current state of the game and its activities, the NHL believes that it is essential to continue to build on the momentum created by our players and will not exercise its option to reopen the game. 'ABC. We are rather willing to ensure that the current collective agreement remains in effect for the duration of his term – three additional seasons until the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season.

"We hope that a period of continuous and sustainable peace in the world of work will allow us to continue to develop the game and benefit all constituencies: NHL players, clubs, our trading partners and, more importantly again, our fans.

"In any ABC, parties can always identify problems with which they are not satisfied and would like to see change. This is certainly true from the point of view of the League. However, our analysis clearly shows that the benefits of continuing to operate under the terms of the current CBA, while working with the Players Association to address our respective concerns, far outweigh the disastrous consequences of its post-season termination. to come up. "

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet notes that both parties have had discussions, but how far is unknown. The NHLPA Executive Committee and some players will meet Wednesday in Chicago. It is not known where the meetings will take place in the city.

The last two times, both parties have negotiated work stoppages. The 2004-05 was a total lockout, as it was less than a season for the Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup for the fifth time in its history.

The current CBA is scheduled for September 2022 if neither party decides to withdraw.
