NHL offers new start date, 56-game schedule – The Athletic

The elephant in the room remains, the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association on Friday morning still had not resolved their financial impasse over salary deferrals for the 2020-2021 season. But in good faith, both sides continue to hammer out any non-economic issues to plan a season.

As my TSN colleague Frank Seravalli first reported, the NHL and NHLPA had more meetings on Thursday night, which produced some interesting developments.

Sources on both sides have confirmed the following to me:

• The January 1 start date that both sides have been hanging on to is no longer realistic given where we are on the schedule. On Thursday, for the first time, the NHL asked the NHLPA about a start to the season in mid-January.

• A 52-game, 56-game schedule was discussed as options Thursday night, but a source says the two teams’ preference would be 56 games for obvious income reasons.

• Training camps for all 31 …
