The Rangers’ protection list for the upcoming expansion project of the new Seattle Kraken franchise came as no major surprises.

The Blueshirts have protected seven forwards, three defenders and goalkeeper Alexandar Georgiev, with their most notable exhibits, including newly acquired pending free agent Barclay Goodrow, fellow forwards Julien Gauthier, Colin Blackwell and Phillip Di Giuseppe, the defenders Tony DeAngelo, Anthony Bitetto and Brendan Smith and the third-goalkeeper Keith Kinkaid.

After handing out center Brett Howden to the Las Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday, the Rangers protected forward Kevin Rooney as the seventh forward. The other proteges were Artemi Panarin, Mike Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, Pavel Buchnevich, Ryan Strome and Filip Chytil, as well as defenders Jacob Trouba, Ryan Lindgren and Libor Hajek.

The expansion draft takes place on Wednesday, and Seattle will select 30 players – one from each team’s availability list, with the exception of the Golden Knights, who joined the NHL in 2017. The teams have been allowed to protect eight skaters and a goalie or seven forwards, three defensemen and a goalie.

All first and second year professionals and unsigned draft picks are exempt from screening and do not need to be protected. Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox, Kaapo Kakko, Alexis Lafrenière, K’Andre Miller and Igor Shesterkin fall into this category with the Rangers, among others.

Among those left available by the Islanders are stalwarts Josh Bailey and Jordan Eberle, forwards Leo Komarov, Kieffer Bellows and Otto Koivula and defenders Andy Greene and Sebastian Aho.

The Devils have left former trophy winner Norris PK Subban, which hit a cap of $ 9 million at the start of the final year of his contract, unprotected.

Other big names available for the Kraken include: Canadiens goalie Carey Price, 2019 Norris winner Mark Giordano (Flames) and Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko.

The Kraken entered an exclusive 72-hour window on Sunday morning to negotiate with exposed pending free agents such as Alexander Ovechkin and Gabriel Landeskog.
