‘Redeemer’, which was set to reunite Matthew McConaughey with the creator of ‘True Detective’, is no longer moving forward after the actor drops the drama.
The Nic Pizzolatto era at FX is coming to an end.
Several sources say The Hollywood Reporter that FX and Fox 21 / Touchstone Television are negotiating with the Real detective creator on a release package that would end his first contract with the two Disney-owned brands. The move, the sources say, comes as Pizzolatto has two years left on the deal he signed last year.
Pizzolatto’s FX / Touchstone chord was linked to Redeemer, a drama that was to reunite him with Real detective star Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey gave up Redeemer, say the sources, and without the actor involved, FX no longer goes ahead with the series and no longer needs to keep Pizzolatto under an agreement of its own linked to the series.
The decision to sever ties with Pizzolatto comes as Touchstone (formerly known as Fox 21) has undergone a series of changes over the past year. Fox 21 was part of the studio operations sold to Disney a few years ago. Disney rebranded the studio as Touchstone Television last year and, as part of efforts to consolidate its studio business, folded Touchstone to 20th Television in December. As part of the changes, Fox 21 / Touchstone chairman Bert Salke – who had overseen the studio for a decade – resigned from his post. (He has since signed his own rich production deal with Disney Television Studios.)
Pizzolatto transferred its global contract to FX / Touchstone last January after the Real detective creator has moved from his longtime old home to HBO. Pizzolatto had been with HBO since the first season of Real detective. The anthology won 12 Emmy nominations, including for star McConaughey and writing for Pizzolatto. (The first season had five wins in other categories.)
As to his decision to quit HBO, sources said THR Last year, the showrunner met with executives from the premium cable network owned by WarnerMedia to discuss a new deal, and all parties involved agreed it was time to go their separate ways. Pizzolatto ultimately signed with FX / Touchstone after meeting several streamers as well as traditional studios amid the streaming arms race and fierce competition to recruit established showrunners.
Representatives for Pizzolatto, FX, Touchstone and sister studio 20th Television all declined to comment.
When it comes to FX, the basic cable network run by John Landgraf has a list of originals that includes American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Atlanta, Better Things, Breeders, Mayans, Pose, Snowfall and What we do in the shadows as well as the next Reservation dogs and Gun. As part of Disney’s Investor Day at the end of last year, FX announced a Extraterrestrial TV series, a drama with The Rolling Stones and a revamped version Shogun. The network is also developing a dramatic comedy with alumni Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner.
