Nick Diaz arrived in Las Vegas for UFC Fight Week 266, but declined to make an appearance on Wednesday’s media day.
The former welterweight title contender is set to play his first fight in over six years when he takes on Robbie Lawler in a five-round bout on the main card to the card.
Unfortunately, his first scheduled appearance during fight week didn’t go as planned after Diaz arrived at UFC APEX, but then didn’t speak to the media as planned.
Diaz was initially scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, but his time came and went without an appearance as other fighters participating in UFC 266 continued to answer questions. After the last athlete to answer questions, the UFC public relations team informed the assembled media that Diaz will not be appearing but that he is still expected to appear for the UFC pre-fight press conference. 266 Thursday.
While the one-day media no-show is nothing new for Diaz, it’s the final wrinkle of an already interesting fight week after Diaz’s team demanded the clash with Lawler pass. from welterweight to middleweight just days before the event.
While with the media on Wednesday, Lawler didn’t seem too bothered by the change, although he also admitted there wasn’t much he could do about it if he still wanted to compete.
“It just doesn’t make sense to get upset and excited about what happened, it’s rubbish,” Lawler said. “Just stay relaxed. Camp went well, so that’s pretty much what it comes down to.
“I fall back on the work that I have done. The job I did went very well. My training partner Jason Jackson put me on top and ready to go. I am lively at the moment. I’m fucking strong. My coaches did a great job. That’s what I fall for and why I don’t worry too much about it. Life is Beautiful.”
Even the latest episode of UFC Embedded failed to capture any new footage of Diaz and instead featured part of his interview with the UFC countdown program which previewed the entire event taking place on Saturday.
During his career, Diaz failed to make the media commitments required by the UFC, including a press conference in 2011 that actually cost him a main event title fight against Georges St. -Rock. Although he eventually returned to the main event spot against BJ Penn, Diaz is certainly no stranger to these kinds of situations.
The UFC 266 pre-fight press conference is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT. Diaz is expected to appear alongside Lawler as well as the main and co-main event fighters competing this weekend. The event will be broadcast live on MMA Fighting.
