Last night Saturday Night Live was even more musical than usual, probably because the writers built their sketches around host Nick Jonas’ melodic skill set. In the second best musical sketch of the night, Jonas sets up his boyfriend Mickey’s (Beck Bennett) bachelor party with the ultimate goal of all the guys having boners in the same room together, as a group. The sketch speaks to the absurdity of traditionally “male” straight male rituals like watching strippers together, but it is played in a heartfelt comic fashion. “I love getting tough on my friends, boneless next to my friends,” Jonas sings in a falsetto. The sketch is not subtle with its message, the chorus simply says, “boner, boner, boner, boner next to my friends!” Jonas then sings, “chubby with the guys, that was my only plan.” At the end, the group lifts their hands free from a table with what Heidi Gardner calls their “rigid ding dongs”. It’s the lowest form of comedy, but the chorus is pretty catchy.
