Nick Lachey didn’t know what to expect when he said yes to working with Grimes on Fox’s new singing competition series, “Alter Ego”.

The 98 Degrees singer, 47, told Page Six in an exclusive interview that serving as a judge alongside the experimental pop star, 33 – who embraces an otherworldly character, avant-garde fashions and a his futuristic – was an interesting experience.

“I’ve never felt older in my life than sitting next to Grimes in a jury,” Lachey said with a laugh, “because the way her mind works and the things she understands, I don’t even begin to understand how these things work.

Boy band icon and Grimes – who shares 16-month-old son X Æ A-Xii with tech billionaire Elon Musk – are joined by rock pioneer Alanis Morissette and Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i. am.

The eclectic quartet were asked to do something never before seen on reality TV: judge contestants who actually perform backstage in motion capture costumes as their over-the-top avatars appear on a screen.

“What I find really cool about our jury is that we are all so different. We come from different backgrounds, ”Lachey noted. “Will is also very interested in technology. I think Alanis and I are a little more of your kind of straight-up performers, not really understanding what’s going on.

“But I think what I understand and really recognize is the real talent – and that’s what shows in the performances.”

When asked how “Alter Ego” compares to such staples as “American Idol” and “The Voice,” Lachey pointed to his “radical” concept and the talent of the competitors behind computer-generated characters. .

“These singers are tough guys. That’s all I’m going to say. And they face unprecedented conditions… They are backstage in a vocal booth while their “alter ego” occurs. It’s definitely unexplored waters when it comes to a singing competition show, ”he said.

“The technology is amazing. People are going to be blown away by this. But behind that there is a real soul – a real sincere and emotional soul for these performances. “

If the show produces a superstar, which Lachey anticipates, he explained that they will enter the industry as their chosen “alter ego” rather than revealing their true identities.

Lachey is looking for the “Next Generation Superstar” as a judge on “Alter Ego”.

“Maybe they have stage fright or anxiety. Maybe they have a problem with their self-image or their self-esteem and it’s a way for them to hide behind something,” “Every story is different, every trip is different,” he said.

Lachey added, “Not that the humans on stage are ever going to go away, but I think there is room for this next-gen superstar. Anyone who comes out of this competition as a champion will have a real opportunity to step into that role and be kind of a trailblazer as it moves forward.

“Alter Ego” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
