Mike Soroka had another excellent performance while Nick Markakis made up for lost time in the Atlanta Braves' 5-0 victory over the Washington Nationals.
Soroka faced Max Scherzer for the second time in less than a week. Scherzer held Atlanta at bay in the first game, as the Nationals avoided a sweep at SunTrust Park. He would not be so lucky this time.
The Braves hit first against Scherzer in the fourth. Markakis started with a double and scored a singles Matt Joyce to score 1-0. Dansby Swanson would follow later with a double right that scored Joyce to increase the lead to 2-0.
Between games, Freddie Freeman leaves the game and is replaced by Charlie Culberson. The Braves later announced that Freeman was out on a precaution due to right elbow pain.
Atlanta hit back into fifth base as they were charging goals against Scherzer for a goal. Markakis centered the ball in the middle, allowing Victor Robles to beat off the wall but Ronald Acuña Jr. scored and scored 3-0.
Scherzer would leave after the fifth after giving seven hits and three points. He took out six and walked two while he was shooting 99 shots.
Ozzie Albies led seventh with her 23rd home run to extend her lead to 4-0. Rafael Ortega scored another goal in the eighth with a double to complete the score.
Soroka entered Friday's game after allowing five home runs in his last two starts. He has been excellent in this one, allowing only one sure hit in six shutouts. He walked three and scratched four.
Albies led the way in Atlanta with a 3-on-4 record. Markakis scored twice against three, scored two points and scored the same goal in his opening match. Joyce and Josh Donaldson finished with two shots each.
With this victory, Atlanta reduced its magic number to drop from the east of the NL to six and increases its division lead to 9.5 games. The series will continue Saturday with Mike Foltynewicz scheduled for the start for Atlanta. The winners will fight with right-hander Austin Voth.
