Alabama coach Nick Saban said on Tuesday that sophomore quarterback Bryce Young, the team’s alleged starter in 2021, had already earned nearly $ 1 million in sponsorship deals.
“Our QB has already approached ungodly numbers, and he hasn’t even played yet, ”Saban said at the Texas High School Coaches Association convention, according to 247 Sports. “If I tell you what it is… it’s almost seven digits.”
Young has signed with CAA, one of the most powerful agencies representing NFL players, for its marketing deals. As of July 1, college athletes in Alabama and several other states can legally earn income from their name, image, and likeness. NCAA rules have also been relaxed to allow professional representation for these transactions.
Young has one of the biggest social media followers among Alabama players and has signed deals with companies like Cash App.
The revenue from those deals is what would have been expected from one of Alabama’s recent starting quarterbacks. If Tua Tagovailoa had been able to monetize his name, image and likeness in Alabama, an expert told AL.com in 2020 he could have earned “three to five million, easily” in income. Another expert added that Tagovailoa could have made a few million dollars, but more likely six figures at the start of his college career.
A five-star rookie in 2020, Young supported Mac Jones in freshman but did not start a game. He was the first team quarterback in practice this spring and is scheduled to start this fall.
Georgia quarterback JT Daniels, who preceded Young to their California high school, praised his SEC counterpart during the SEC media days on Tuesday.
“He’s a stallion. He’s a star player, ”Daniels said. “When I left Mater Dei and they got Bryce, I had known Bryce since he was in eighth grade, I was in seventh grade. I knew at the time that he was a special player. Honestly, when Mater Dei got it, I was excited.
“I told MaxPreps he would be the best quarterback in the country when he was a junior in high school because I saw him play and I think he’s a really good player. I expect a lot of success for Bryce.
Saban will speak to reporters Wednesday morning in Hoover. Wide receiver John Metchie and defensive lineman Phil Mathis will represent the Tide on the podium.
