No.1 Alabama and No.3 Ohio State will meet for the national championship a week from now after the Buckeyes knocked out favorites Clemson Tigers in the Sugar Bowl on Friday night. Alabama and Clemson have seen each other a lot throughout the college football playoff editions, including three clashes in the National Championship.
That’s why college football radio host Paul Finebaum believes Alabama head coach Nick saban is happier to see the state of Ohio in the final. The two schools met in the semifinals of the inaugural college football playoffs, with Ohio State claiming the national title over Oregon.
Speaking in his weekly WJOX spot on Monday morning, Finebaum explained why he believes Saban will host a different opponent for college football supremacy.
“In a strange and quirky way, I think deep down, Nick saban is happier to see the state of Ohio on the ground than Clemson, ”Finebaum said on WJOX. “And that’s only because of the story. We all know the story of Alabama and Clemson. I think it’s a program in South Carolina that knows it can beat Alabama. I don’t think what happened in 2014 has an impact on this game. We live in a completely different world.
“I think Saban will probably prefer to try his luck against Ryan Day’s team rather than another game against Dabo swinney. Although, really, these days with Dabo swinney, you kind of invite this challenge because you don’t know how Dabo swinney will affect the outcome of the match through his mouth.
Saban and Swinney have met four times in the college football playoffs, with the coaches split, but Swinney has the advantage in the domestic championship, 2-1.
Alabama’s attack is possibly the deadliest in the country, but after Ohio State’s display against Clemson, Saban’s defense may need to conjure something that can contain the quarterback. Justin fields.
Fields stole the show, despite some vicious shots in the ribs against the Tigers. Even Kirk Herbstreit was blown away by Fields’ historic performance.
“I’ve been following Ohio State football, really, since the mid-’70s,” Herbstreit said on the show. “I try to think of any type of individual performance where a guy had to go through one performance and had six touchdown passes. Ohio State (7-0) is set to face No.1 Alabama (12-0) at the College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 11 in Miami, Fla. At 8 p.m. ET.
