Nicolas Cage says Joe Exotic’s role in Amazon series is not happening: “No longer relevant”

It looks like Nicolas Cage won’t fit into Joe Exotic’s cowboy boots after all.

Following the immense success of the highly unlikely Netflix documentary series “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” in 2020, the eclectic actor has been selected for an eight-part dramatization of the life of the series’ subject, Joseph Maldonado- Passage, better known as Exotic Joe.

Cage was an obvious choice to take on the flamboyant former Oklahoma zookeeper, who is currently serving time behind bars for orchestrating a botched murder plot against his rival, Big Cat Rescue CEO Carole Baskin. . However, speaking to Variety, the 57-year-old actor hinted that Amazon Studios was dropping the project in large part because the hype around “Tiger King” had largely passed.

“We should erase the record,” Cage told the outlet. “I read two great scripts, which I thought were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become a past time because it took so long to come together. . They sensed at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it is no longer relevant. “

Luckily for those hoping to see Nicolas Cage take on the now infamous role, sources told the outlet that Imagine and CBS Studios, which produced the series, wanted to shop it on other streaming platforms or networks.

However, that could end up being a tall order given that there is already another “Tiger King” project in the works at Peacock with Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell respectively as Baskin and Maldonado-Passage. The latter was first pictured in full Joe Exotic gear during a PDA-filled scene outside a pet store in Brisbane on Sunday.

In the event that the Nicolas Cage version of Joe Exotic makes it to television screens, it would mark the Oscar-winning actor’s first foray into the world of television. Unfortunately, despite his notoriety and Hollywood career, Cage was not on Joe Exotic’s list of real actors to represent him in movies or on television.
