The first full trailer for Nicolas Cage’s new film Prisoners of Ghost Country is here and it features a bold proclamation of the star herself. In the trailer, Cage is quoted as saying Ghost country is “The craziest movie I have ever made.” Who, coming from someone with a resume as Cageis to say something. But since it’s a movie about a criminal forced to wear an anti-bomb suit and go to a desert to save the granddaughter of a crime boss from a group of mysterious nomadic ghostsyou are beautifule, it’s pretty wild.
Directed by Sion Sono (Show of love, cold fish, Tokyo tribe), Prisoners of Ghost Country hits theaters and VOD on September 17th. He co-stars Bill Moseley and Sofia Boutella, and here’s the trailer.
So the trailer pretty much says it all, but here is what you just watched. The film is fixed in a place called Samurai Town, where Cage is a bank robber jailed after a job goes horribly wrong. However, when the granddaughter (Boutella) of the town warchief (Moseley) goes missing, the warchief offers the thief a deal. Put on this explosive suit and head to the wasteland and collect it, otherwise. It does, of course, and what it finds is not at all what you expect.
Prisoners of Ghost Country debuted this year Virtual Sundance Film Festival before being picked up by RLJE Films. We watched it and frankly found the savagery to be a bit too much. The movie never comes together and feels extremely disjointed. At least that was my opinion. You can read the full review here. But, as you can see in the trailer, a lot of people who aren’t the stars of the movie really liked it. Many reviews from other sites have praised this unique movie and I would rather watch something that takes a huge risk like Prisoners of Ghost Country than another remake of a movie that was not good to begin with, or one franchise reboot prequel that never takes off. So even just in that aspect, it’s pretty darn wild.
Again, the film hits theaters and VOD on September 17th.
