Last year Nicole Kidman sat watching Fosse / Verdon with Keith Urban and thought, “Hey, I could do that!” Or at least that’s what I’m guessing is the origin story of this footage from Ryan Murphy’s Netflix adaptation of Prom. In the film, Kidman plays Angie Dickinson (based on the character of Angie Schworer from the stage version), a permanent stunt double in Chicago who travels to Indiana with the film’s other Broadway stars to help a lesbian teen named Emma (Jo Ellen Pellman) take her girlfriend to the ball. Along the way, Nicole interprets this little number of Fosse to give Emma confidence. She introduces her with a sort of unmoored accent from both America and Australia, just floating in the ocean somewhere, and doing dance moves that may or may not be good enough, given that it’s impossible to tell due to Ryan Murphy’s commitment to completely avoiding body hits and cuts as many times as possible. Zazz! As Cancellation, it doesn’t really make sense, but at least Nicole is having fun.
