This season of America has talent put on many memorable and heartbreaking auditions, but it was 30-year-old singer-songwriter and three-time cancer survivor Jane Marczewski, aka Nightbirde, who moved the usually stoic Simon Cowell to tears. His elegant take on his ethereal original ballad “It’s OK” even earned Cowell’s Golden Buzzer, speeding him straight to live shows this season 16.
But when the live rounds begin on August 10, Nightbirde will ultimately not be in the competition. Monday she announced that she was leaving EIGHT to focus on her current cancer treatment.
“Sharing my heart with the world on ‘AGT’ has been an honor and a dream come true. My perspective this summer has been astounding. What a miracle that the pain I have been through can be transformed into a beauty that makes people around the world open their eyes wider, ”the folk-pop singer posted on Instagram. “Since my hearing, my health has deteriorated and the fight against cancer requires all my energy and all my attention. I am so sad to announce that I will not be able to continue this season of “AGT”. Life doesn’t always give those who deserve a break, but we already knew that. Thanks for all your support, it means the world to me. Stay with me, I’ll be better soon. I plan my future, not my inheritance. Enough beaten, but I still have dreams.
When Nightbirde EIGHT audition aired last June, she took the stage looking physically thin and frail, but had such a sense of serenity and strength that when she revealed that she had “cancer in my lungs, ma spine and my liver ”and that the doctors had given him only a 2% chance of survival, the disheartened judge Howie Mandel gasped,“ So… you are not OK? “She replied, very calmly,” Well, not all over the place, no. “
While she did not share more details about her battle with cancer on the air, a blog post on her website recounted her heartbreaking ordeal. On New Year’s Eve 2019, Marczewski was diagnosed with terminal cancer after “countless tumors” were found on his lungs, liver, lymph nodes, ribs and spine, and he was said he had six months to live. In July 2020, she went into remission, but tragically the cancer quickly returned. “I’ve had cancer three times now and I’m barely over 30,” read the singer’s blog. “There are times when I wonder what I had to do to deserve such a story. I sometimes fear that when I die and meet God, he will say that I disappointed him, or offended, or that I disappointed him. Maybe he’ll say that I just never learned the lesson, or that I wasn’t grateful enough. But one thing I’m sure is this: he can never say he didn’t know me.
The raw but eloquent manner of Nightbirde with words translated into the lyrics of “It’s OK”, and his EIGHT the hearing was so raw and convincing that when she finally shyly stepped back from the microphone, there was a long, stunned pause – before a muffled Cowell stammered a single “Wow,“called her” absolutely gorgeous “and hit her Golden Buzzer. Marczewski then fell to her knees, sobbing with joy, as Cowell took the stage to kiss her. Later, Cowell told his fellow judges:” God, that really touched me, ”still seemingly stunned by what he had just witnessed.
It is not known what type of treatment Marczewski is currently undergoing; if another of 150 EIGHT the candidates who have auditioned successfully this season will automatically take his vacant place; or if Marczewski can return to the show (maybe in a future season) once she feels stronger, hopefully. But one thing is for sure: Nightbirde is a fighter. Backstage after her audition on that emotional June evening, she said EIGHT Host Terry Crews, “I have a 2 percent chance of survival, but 2 percent is not zero percent. Two percent is Something, and I would like people to know how amazing it is.
