According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, the New York Mets made a big offer to the free right-hander Trevor Bauer in the hopes of securing its services for 2021 and possibly beyond.
According to the report:
“[The Mets] have formally offered [Bauer] a contract that would make him the highest paid player in baseball based on an average annual salary, ”Nightengale writes, per source. “Deal would eclipse New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole$ 36 million [AAV] on his nine-year, $ 324 million contract signed a year ago, but would be much shorter. “
Nightengale adds that New York “has been aggressive in recent weeks, and has since kept in touch with Bauer,” confirming information throughout the weekend of ongoing discussions revolving around the NL, 30 years old, reigning Cy young Prize winner.
Bauer’s off-pitch baggage is certainly on the team’s mind. Nightengale confirms “while the offer [to Bauer] still stands, a team manager warned that the Mets are still evaluating all aspects of Bauer’s strong social media presence.
Shortly after the Nightengale story was published, Jon Heyman of MLB Network and Mark Feinsand from MLB.com refuted the report of a proposed recording contract, but both noted continued interest on New York’s part.
Over 11 starts in 2020, Bauer kicked off a 1.73 ERA to lead the NL with 100 strikeouts, 17 steps and 0.79 WHIP, leading him to free will with a head full of steam.
Whether his sometimes problematic social media presence is affecting this momentum needs to be determined quickly.
