Nintendo files a strange patent for Joy-Cons hinged

A strange patent application filed by Nintendo in Japan leaves the fans a doubt about its purpose, even before one wonders if it will actually become a device that people can buy for the Switch. But now, a pair of Joy-Cons with a hinge.

The hinge tilts the upper part of each Joy-Con (the left thumb to the left, the face buttons to the right) down or away from the user, at an angle of about 20 to 30 degrees (in this case). Against the natural posture of a hand with his thumb in the stick, this seems to be an ergonomic improvement.

There seems to be a second design with the bottom of the controller slightly tilted as well, for an additional ergonomic grip. The Joy-Con retains a straight inner railing, so that it stays attached to a standard Nintendo Switch unit. And since dock housing does not extend beyond the width of the screen, there is no problem for a switch equipped with two of these elements.

Images further in the patent application show that it is a mobile hinge, with the Joy-Con flat lock to use in a traditional, two-player manner. Connected, I guess this is for experienced users who play most often their handheld and want a better grip of their device (snicker snicker).

Commentators on this Reddit thread emphasize that Joy-Cons are already so small that a review does not leave much room for new things. The upcoming Nintendo Switch Lite, whose controllers can not be separated, had to get rid of the HD rumor and the infrared camera, because of its reduced footprint. A hinge can also sacrifice another feature.

So, if it ever comes on the market, it could be more of a novelty than a new standard for the Switch's official controllers. Why not, even at $ 79.99 for a set, many people have multiple Joy-Cons for no reason other than the different colors are attractive. The latest information we have on the new Joy-Cons is the new shades available on October 4th (for a total of 11 official colors). There is also the issue of "drifting Joy-Con", which Nintendo quietly offers to repair for free. It is supposed that all the causes of this phantom entry would be addressed in these new conceptions.
