Facepalm: The Switch is the must-have handheld of the modern era, but over 30 years ago it was another Nintendo laptop that was all the rage. Unfortunately for a recent buyer, his “brand new” 1989 Game Boy turned out to be anything but. Ouch.
In 1989, Nintendo released an 8-bit handheld console known as the Game Boy. It was designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the longtime Nintendo employee who was also responsible for creating the Game & Watch and the D-pad. Although it was technically inferior to rival systems of the time, it ended up being a huge hit for Nintendo.
It is estimated that 118.69 million Game Boy and Game Boy Color units were sold during their respective lifecycles.
Nintendo stopped making the Game Boy many moons ago, which means the only way to get your hands on one these days is through eBay shopping, thrift stores, or garage sales. Nintendo Life did the latter.
In a new unboxing video, the post examines a recent garage sale discovery – an original Nintendo Game Boy. Or at least, that’s what the buyer has been led to believe. As you will see, not everything in life is as promised.

In hindsight, there was at least one big tell that might have helped determine if this was a legitimate new-in-the-box Game Boy. While not all Game Boy systems ship in shrink wrap or with official Nintendo tape sealing the box, many did. This particular example did not have either, and was instead sealed with duct tape what appeared to be regular clear tape.
It is not a total loss. The buyer got an original box and the connecting cable / headphones appear unused.
