Nintendo has shipped 1 million Switch consoles to China since the system launched in the country at the end of 2019, according to its Chinese partner Tencent. This indicates that Nintendo has now surpassed Microsoft and Sony as the biggest seller of consoles in China.

According to Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, the total installed base of the switch in the country is estimated to be over 4 million units, including the many units which have been imported from outside of China. Ahmed also confirms that with sales of 1 million units since 2019, the Switch has outperformed combined sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One during the same period.

China is the world’s largest video game market, but it is dominated by mobile and PC games, with consoles seen as a niche proposition. Until 2014, consoles were banned in the region – but this is precisely why China is such an important territory to be successful, as the growth potential is huge, unlike North America, Japan. or to Europe.

Niko Partners believes the Chinese console market’s revenue will climb to $ 2.15 billion in 2024 – which is twice as much as it was in 2019 – and being the best dog in such a profitable market doesn’t will only help Nintendo. The Switch’s popularity in China will also help Nintendo boost its sales targets for the console, which sold 68.30 million units worldwide as of September 30, 2020.

Nintendo plans to sell 24 million Switch units for the year ending March 2021.
