EShop selection

December has been another busy month in the Nintendo Switch eShop, with many fantastic games to choose from for fun while on vacation. Of course, then, we should probably grab the good old Nintendo Life eShop Selects prizes!

These awards aim to celebrate the best of Nintendo’s digital store, giving a little love and attention to games that could so easily be missing from Switch’s ever-growing library.

So let’s get started. Here are the best eShop Switch games of December 2020!

Honorable mentions:

While these titles don’t quite make our top three this month, they’re still worth checking out.

Dicey Dungeons (Switch eShop)Dicey Dungeons (Switch eShop)

Editor: Distraction software / Developer: Distraction software

Release date: Dec 15, 2020 (United States) / Dec 15, 2020 (UK / EU)

Third place this month is Dicey Dungeons, a cute, infuriating, but dangerously pleasant roguelike adventure. The game is set in a bizarre game show, where players are turned into dice and must fight their way through a series of treacherous and changing dungeons ruled by chance. In our review, we gave it a very solid 9/10, praising its variety of gameplay, music, and combat system. Make sure to read and download the game if that sounds like your thing.

Among us (Switch eShop)Among us (Switch eShop)

Editor: Innersloth / Developer: Innersloth

Release date: Dec 15, 2020 (United States) / Dec 15, 2020 (UK / EU)

In second place, you’ve probably heard of it, even if you haven’t had a chance to play: Among Us yet. This one has taken the video game world by storm in the countless lockdowns we’ve faced recently, so it’s no surprise that the Nintendo Life team is having a lot of fun with him now that he’s finally on Switch.

You’ll need a group of friends and a separate voice chat app to get the most out of it, but when those hurdles are overcome, here we have an instantly accessible and super addicting casual gaming experience, perfect to get online -togethers. Get on it if you haven’t already!

DOOM Eternal (Switch eShop)DOOM Eternal (Switch eShop)

Editor: Bethesda / Developer: Software id

Release date: December 8, 2020 (United States) / December 8, 2020 (UK / EU)

And taking the gold is a game that arguably shouldn’t even have qualified for the awards in the first place. Yes, DOOM Eternal is technically a digital-only eShop game on Nintendo’s platform, which means that despite its huge fanbase and equally huge budget, it does indeed meet our strict criteria.

Of course, the big talking point with this one is the harsh, but sadly essential, visual downgrade required for the game to run properly on Switch. We admit it looks a lot better on other systems, but the fact that Panic Button ran on a small, portable tablet – at 30fps, no less – is remarkable.

Add to that the fact that the game itself is yet another wonderful, gritty, demon-wreaking journey through hell that’s just as satisfying as you’d hoped for, and it becomes pretty easy to see why we named it is our first choice of the group. Rip and tear, folks. Tear. And. Tear.

How we decide that our eShop selects the top three: As we come to the end of each month, Nintendo Life staff votes on their favorite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To be eligible for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select qualifying matches based on their evaluation scores.

Staff members are then invited to vote for three games that they believe deserve to be placed high on this list; the first choice gets 3 points, the second choice gets 2 points and the third choice gets 1 point. These votes are then counted to create a top three list, with the overall winner taking home the top prize of the month.
