With a whole new year coming new Switch games, and while January has traditionally been a quiet month for new releases, there were still some absolute crackers to enjoy this time around.
These awards aim to celebrate the best of Nintendo’s digital store, giving a little love and attention to games that could so easily be missing from Switch’s ever-growing library.
So let’s get started. Here are the best Switch eShop games of January 2021!

While these titles don’t quite make our top three this month, they’re certainly worth checking out.

Hitman 3 – Cloud Version takes third place this month, an imperfect but more than functional version of the latest version of IO Interactive. Streaming is never really going to be the optimal solution when it comes to gaming – you’ll need a particularly strong internet connection to enjoy it – but for Switch owners who don’t have access to another system, this version at least offers a welcome option.
As for the game itself, we’ve described it as “a fitting sendoff for one of the game’s great protagonists,” giving the Switch version an 8/10. If you have the required internet connection, it is definitely worth it.

In second place is Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game – Complete Edition – and no, we didn’t let Zion vote for this one 300 times like he asked us, we promise.
Another fantastic beat ’em up to enjoy on your Switch, this latest release from Scott Pilgrim features the explosive presentation and crisp combat gameplay we all hoped for. There are a few peaks in difficulty which put the brakes on the procedures a bit, but it’s still easy to recommend for us and has taken the NL team by storm over the past couple of weeks.

Speaking of storming the team, first we have Cyber Shadow – a game that has surpassed our voting rank by a mile this month.
From Mechanical Head and Yacht Club Games, Cyber Shadow is an absolute must-have for fans of retro action platforms. With well-built levels, authentic layout, tight controls, and high yet enjoyable difficulty, the game is a supreme and focused experience which we can easily say is well worth your time.
If you have the budget to buy another game from the last month, definitely consider this one.
How we decide that our eShop selects the top three: As we come to the end of each month, Nintendo Life staff votes on their favorite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To be eligible for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select qualifying matches based on their evaluation scores. Staff members are then invited to vote for three games that they believe deserve to be placed high on this list; the first choice gets 3 points, the second choice gets 2 points and the third choice gets 1 point. These votes are then counted to create a top three list, with the overall winner taking the top prize of the month.
